Digiaikana tietoja jaetaan, kerätään ja käsitellään jatkuvasi. Siksi tietosuojasääntöjen on oltava selkeät ja jämerät. Ne varmistavat, että yksilö voi hallita omia tietojaan sekä turvata henkilökohtaisen vapautensa, itsemääräämisoikeutensa ja sananvapautensa. Tietosuojasäännöt ovat ratkaisevan tärkeitä myös väärinkäytön, luvattoman käytön, identiteettivarkauksien ja manipuloinnin estämiseksi. Vahvat tietosuojatakeet lisäävät luottamusta verkkopalveluihin.
